Street address: c/o Careggi Hospital-Padiglione 2. EUROPEAN COMMUNITY CITIZENS ON SHORT STAYS IN ITALY: If citizens from a country belonging to the European Union, the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or Switzerland (since 1 June 2002), require medical treatment during a short stay in Italy, they will be entitled to receive direct healthcare services from public and private structures under contract with the National Health Service (SSN), by exhibiting the TEAM (European Health Insurance Card) or a substitutive certificate. The SSN consists of a network of local health departments (ASL) and hospitals located all over the territory. Direct healthcare services are understood as those supplied free of charge, except for payment of a ticket (participation in the expenses) by the patient. The amount of the ticket is established by each Region. In order to receive the aforementioned healthcare services, the citizen can go directly to the structure (hospital, physician’s rooms, etc.) and exhibit a valid Health Insurance Card (or an equivalent certificate). This is the only requirement for receiving the healthcare services as would an italian citizen, ( according to the same regulations). General Practitioners under contract with the National Health Service (GPs) Upon presentation of the Health Insurance Card (TEAM) or a provisional substitutive certificate, general practitioners and paediatricians under contract with the National Health Service (SSN) will carry out direct visits and prescribe specialist visits, laboratory tests, diagnostic exams, medicinal products and hospitalisation. From Mondays to Fridays, visits to general practitioners and paediatricians under contract do not entail payment of the physician’s fees or the ticket by the patient. For emergencies on Saturdays, Sundays and at night (from 8.00 pm until 8.00 am every day), the night-time Medical On-call Service operates free of charge. During the summer months, a Tourist Medical On-call Service is set up in regions with a high tourist flow, and which for organisational reasons, requires payment of visits by all tourists with rates varying from the Region to Region. In this case the sum paid by patients (and any expenses for other services) will be fully refunded upon presentation of the receipt(s) to their insurance company which will take care of requesting the rates of the services in Italy with the formula 126/SO67-SO68. NON-EUROPEAN COMMUNITY CITIZENS ON SHORT STAYS IN ITALY: Foreign citizens staying in Italy for less than 3 months (tourist visa, holiday, business, etc.) are assured the following in the healthcare structures: Emergency hospital services (casualty, outpatients, ordinary hospitalisation or day hospital) for which the full rates must be paid at the time of discharge; Scheduled, freely-chosen healthcare services with advance payment of the full rate. The rates for the healthcare services are established by the respective Region. FOR MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS European Community tourists holding a TEAM CARD can contact any general practioner: all other tourists without the TEAM CARD can personally contact the Casualty department and pay the amount owed.
